Holmium is one of the rarest lanthanidesIt is found in monacite sand and some other minerals. It is always present with other members of this family, from which it is very difficult to separate after literally thousands of recrystallizations.
Holmium is a monoisotope element (holmium-165).

Application

Obtaining superstrong magnetic fields
Ultra-high purity holmium is used to make pole tips of superconducting magnets to produce super-strong magnetic fields. In the same respect, the holmium-erbium alloy plays an important role.
The radioactive isotope holmium-66 is used in analytical chemistry as a radioactive indicator.

Metallurgy
By adding holmium to aluminum alloys, the gas content in them is sharply reduced.

Laser materials
Holmium ions are used to generate laser radiation in the infrared region of the spectrum, the wavelength is 2.05 μ.

Thermoelectric materials
Thermo-e.d. with holmium monoteluride is 40 μV/K.
